One of the hardest things about struggling to conceive is the not-knowing. You’re trying every month. You’re doing “everything right.” And still – nothing. The emotional weight of this is enormous, and unfortunately, many couples in Chandigarh wait far too long before seeking help because they don’t know where to start.
This post is for you. Here’s a practical guide to taking the first step.
When Should You Seek Help?
- Under 35: After 12 months of regular unprotected intercourse without conception
- 35–40: After 6 months
- Over 40: Seek evaluation immediately – don’t wait
- Any age: Seek earlier if you have known conditions like PCOS, irregular periods, previous pelvic infection, endometriosis, or if your partner has a known fertility issue
The First Appointment: What to Expect
Your first consultation will cover your complete medical history including menstrual cycle details, any previous pregnancies, medical conditions, and lifestyle factors. This helps identify the most likely areas to investigate first.
Initial Tests for Women
- Day 2–3 hormones: FSH, LH, estradiol, AMH (ovarian reserve)
- Day 21 progesterone: To confirm ovulation
- Thyroid function and prolactin: Common causes of disrupted ovulation
- Pelvic ultrasound: To assess ovaries, uterus, and look for PCOS or fibroids
- HSG (hysterosalpingography): X-ray dye test to check if the fallopian tubes are open
Tests for the Male Partner
Approximately 40% of infertility cases are partially or fully due to male factors. A semen analysis (sperm count, motility, morphology) should be done early in the evaluation – ideally at the same time as female investigations, not as an afterthought.
What Are the Treatment Options?
Ovulation Induction
For women who don’t ovulate regularly (most commonly due to PCOS), medications like letrozole or clomiphene are used to stimulate egg release. Timed intercourse or IUI is then used to maximise the chance of conception.
IUI (Intrauterine Insemination)
Prepared sperm is placed directly into the uterus at the time of ovulation. It is less invasive than IVF and is often a first-line treatment for unexplained infertility or mild male factor infertility.
IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation)
For more complex cases – blocked tubes, severe male factor infertility, advanced age – IVF offers the best success rates. We work with established fertility centres in Chandigarh and Mohali for IVF referrals.
