Your 30s are not a time to coast on the health investments of your 20s. They’re the decade when early signals appear – PCOS complications emerge, thyroid issues surface, fertility begins to change PCOS complications emerge, and the seeds of future health are planted. Getting ahead of these changes before 40 makes a real difference.
Here is the complete health checklist I recommend for women approaching 40 in Chandigarh.
Gynaecological Checks
- Cervical Screening (Pap Smear + HPV Test): Every 3–5 years from age 30. Detects pre-cancerous changes early, when treatment is simple and effective
- Pelvic Ultrasound: Baseline scan to check ovaries, uterus and endometrial thickness. Particularly important if you have PCOS, fibroids or irregular periods
- Breast Self-Examination: Monthly, and clinical examination every 1–2 years
- Mammogram Discussion: In India, baseline mammogram around age 40 is recommended for average-risk women; earlier if family history
Hormonal and Metabolic Tests
- Thyroid (TSH): Annual if you have PCOS, family history or symptoms; every 2–3 years otherwise
- Blood glucose (fasting + HbA1c): Annual – pre-diabetes is common in PCOS and can be silent
- Cholesterol panel: Baseline before 40; annual if abnormal
- Vitamin D and B12: Deficiency is extremely common in India and affects energy, mood and bone health
- Ferritin (iron stores): Heavy periods → iron deficiency → fatigue. Many women are chronically iron deficient without knowing
Fertility Planning
- If you have PCOS and plan to conceive after 35: have a fertility evaluation at 33–34 rather than waiting fertility evaluation
- If you know you want to delay family, consider checking AMH between 30–33 and discussing egg freezing if reserve is declining
Intimate Health
- If you have persistent pelvic pain, heavy bleeding or pain during sex – get it investigated. These have treatable causes
- If you have urinary leakage – see a gynecologist. Laser treatment has made this very manageable without surgery
- If you’re approaching perimenopause with dryness or discomfort – treatment is available and effective
Mental and Emotional Health
Women in their 30s carry enormous loads – career, family, ageing parents, relationship pressures. The links between hormonal health and mental health are real and well-established. PCOS, perimenopause and postpartum hormonal changes all affect mood. Please don’t dismiss mood changes as “just stress.”
