You treat the infection. It clears. Three weeks later it’s back. You treat it again. And again. If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone – and importantly, you’re not doing anything wrong. Recurrent vaginal infections have specific causes, and there are specific ways to break the cycle.
The Two Most Common Recurrent Vaginal Infections
Bacterial Vaginosis (BV)
BV is the most common vaginal infection in women of reproductive age. It’s not a sexually transmitted infection – it happens when the natural vaginal bacterial balance is disrupted and anaerobic bacteria overgrow. Symptoms include greyish-white discharge and a distinctive fishy odour, especially after sex.
Up to 50% of women treated for BV experience a recurrence within 3 months. This is frustrating but it has reasons.
Vulvovaginal Candidiasis (Yeast Infection)
Caused by Candida albicans (and sometimes other Candida species), yeast infections cause intense itching, thick white discharge, and soreness. They are very common – about 75% of women will have at least one in their lifetime, and about 5–8% have recurrent infections (4 or more per year).
Why Do They Keep Coming Back?
For BV:
- Partner hasn’t been treated (BV can be sexually associated)
- Vaginal pH remains disrupted after treatment
- Douching or scented products destroying protective lactobacilli
- Antibiotic resistance
- Underlying hormonal imbalance
For Yeast Infections:
- Uncontrolled diabetes or pre-diabetes (Candida thrives on glucose)
- Prolonged antibiotic use destroying protective bacteria
- Immunosuppression
- Wearing tight synthetic clothing
- Non-albicans Candida species that don’t respond to standard treatments
Getting to the Root Cause
If you’ve had 3 or more vaginal infections in a year, a proper investigation is needed – not just another course of the same treatment. This should include:
- Vaginal swab with culture and sensitivity (to identify the exact organism and what it responds to)
- Blood glucose testing
- Hormonal evaluation if appropriate
- Review of hygiene practices and current medications
Breaking the Cycle: What Actually Helps
- Targeted antibiotic or antifungal based on culture results (not guess work)
- Vaginal probiotic with Lactobacillus rhamnosus and L. reuteri strains to restore healthy vaginal flora
- Boric acid vaginal capsules (for resistant BV or non-albicans candida)
- Addressing underlying factors like diabetes control or hormonal imbalance
