You treat the infection. It clears. Three weeks later it’s back. You treat it again. And again. If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone – and importantly, you’re not doing anything wrong. Recurrent vaginal infections have specific causes, and there are specific ways to break the cycle.

The Two Most Common Recurrent Vaginal Infections

Bacterial Vaginosis (BV)

BV is the most common vaginal infection in women of reproductive age. It’s not a sexually transmitted infection – it happens when the natural vaginal bacterial balance is disrupted and anaerobic bacteria overgrow. Symptoms include greyish-white discharge and a distinctive fishy odour, especially after sex.

Up to 50% of women treated for BV experience a recurrence within 3 months. This is frustrating but it has reasons.

Vulvovaginal Candidiasis (Yeast Infection)

Caused by Candida albicans (and sometimes other Candida species), yeast infections cause intense itching, thick white discharge, and soreness. They are very common – about 75% of women will have at least one in their lifetime, and about 5–8% have recurrent infections (4 or more per year).
