There is so much noise about managing PCOS or fertility at 30 – but very little honest conversation about what happens to a woman’s intimate health in her 40s and 50s. Vaginal dryness is one of those things that affects roughly half of all women over 40 and yet most women either don’t talk about it or suffer with it quietly for years.
This needs to change. Let’s talk about it.
What Exactly Is Vaginal Dryness?
The vaginal walls are normally kept moist by fluid secreted by glands near the cervix and the vaginal walls themselves. Oestrogen is the hormone that keeps those tissues healthy, elastic and well-lubricated.
As oestrogen levels fall – which happens naturally around perimenopause (late 30s to 40s) and menopause – these tissues start to thin, lose elasticity and produce less moisture. The clinical term is vaginal atrophy, or more recently, genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM).
Symptoms That Women Often Dismiss
- Burning or itching sensation in the vaginal area
- Pain or discomfort during intercourse (dyspareunia)
- Light bleeding after sex
- Frequent urinary infections without obvious cause
- A feeling of pressure or heaviness in the pelvic area
- Frequent need to urinate or urine leakage on laughing/coughing
Many women I see have been dealing with these symptoms for 2–3 years, assuming it was “just normal ageing.” It isn’t something you have to just tolerate.
Is Vaginal Dryness Only a Menopause Problem?
Not at all. Younger women can also experience vaginal dryness due to:
- Breastfeeding (oestrogen is suppressed during lactation)
- Hormonal contraceptives (especially progesterone-only pills)
- Stress and anxiety (reduces natural lubrication)
- Sjögren’s syndrome or other autoimmune conditions
- Cancer treatments including chemotherapy and radiation
What Treatments Are Available in Chandigarh?
Laser Vaginal Therapy
The most effective non-hormonal treatment available today is fractional CO₂ laser therapy. It works by stimulating collagen and elastin production in the vaginal walls, restoring natural moisture and tissue health. Most women need 2–3 sessions. There is no downtime, no hormone exposure, and the results last 12–18 months.
At Sadhbhavna Clinics Chandigarh, we offer this treatment in a completely private, comfortable setting.
Local Oestrogen Therapy
For women who can use hormones, a low-dose local oestrogen cream or pessary can be very effective. It restores tissue health without the systemic absorption concerns of HRT tablets.
Vaginal Moisturisers and Lubricants
While not a cure, pH-balanced vaginal moisturisers (used 2–3 times a week) and lubricants (used during intimacy) can provide significant day-to-day comfort while you pursue longer-term treatment.
You Don’t Have to Just Live With It
Vaginal dryness affects your quality of life, your intimate relationships and your confidence. It is entirely treatable. There is no reason to suffer in silence.
