For many women, the idea of their first gynaecology appointment brings a mix of relief (finally doing something about a problem) and anxiety (not knowing what will happen). I want this post to remove the anxiety part.
Here’s exactly what happens at your first appointment with me, and how to prepare.
When Should You See a Gynaecologist?
You should consider seeing a gynaecologist if you have:
- Irregular, painful or very heavy periods
- Unusual vaginal discharge
- Pelvic pain or discomfort
- Difficulty conceiving
- Symptoms of PCOS (irregular cycles, weight gain, excess hair)
- Discomfort during intercourse
- Any concerns about your reproductive health
- General health check-up (cervical screening / Pap smear)
What to Bring to Your First Appointment
- A list of your symptoms – when they started, how often they happen, what makes them better or worse
- Details of your last period (date, flow, duration)
- Any previous blood tests, scans or medical reports relevant to your concern
- A list of current medications and supplements
- Your menstrual history (when periods started, typical cycle length)
What Happens During the Consultation
History Taking (10–15 minutes)
I’ll ask about your symptoms, menstrual history, medical history, and any concerns you have. This is a private conversation. There are no stupid questions. Please ask whatever is on your mind.
Physical Examination (if needed)
Not every first appointment involves an internal examination. Whether one is needed depends on your concerns. If it is needed, I will explain exactly what it involves before we proceed, and you can stop at any time.
Investigation Plan
Based on our conversation and examination findings, we may arrange blood tests, an ultrasound, or other investigations. I’ll explain why each test is recommended.
What to Wear
Comfortable clothing that is easy to change out of if an examination is needed. There is no requirement to wear anything specific.
Confidentiality
Everything you tell me is completely confidential. We do not share your information with family members, employers or anyone else without your explicit consent.
I want every woman who comes to Sadhbhavna Clinics to feel heard, respected and comfortable. Book your first appointment today – we serve women from across Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula.
