Hymenoplasty is one of the most sensitive procedures I perform, and women who come to see me about it deserve accurate, non-judgmental information. This post is written for women who are considering the procedure and want to understand it clearly before making a decision.
What Is Hymenoplasty?
Hymenoplasty, also called hymen repair or hymen reconstruction, is a surgical procedure that repairs or reconstructs the hymen – the thin membrane at the entrance of the vagina. It is a short, outpatient procedure typically performed under local anaesthesia.
How Is the Procedure Done?
The procedure usually takes 30–45 minutes. The surgeon carefully brings together the remnants of the hymenal tissue using dissolvable sutures. There are different techniques depending on the amount of tissue available – your surgeon will choose the most appropriate one during your consultation.
No general anaesthesia is needed. Local anaesthesia is applied to ensure the area is completely comfortable during the procedure.
What Is Recovery Like?
- Pain: Mild discomfort for 2–4 days, manageable with standard pain relief
- Activity: Normal daily activities can usually resume within 2–3 days
- Work: Most women return to desk jobs within 2–3 days
- Exercise: Avoid strenuous exercise for 2–3 weeks
- Sexual activity: Avoid for 6–8 weeks
- Follow-up: A review appointment at 2 weeks is standard
What Are the Risks?
Hymenoplasty is a minor procedure with low risk when performed by an experienced surgeon in a sterile setting. Potential complications include:
- Infection (rare, treated with antibiotics)
- Bleeding (rare)
- Scarring
- Less-than-expected results (rare with experienced surgeons)
