This is one of the most common questions I get from women considering laser hair removal in Chandigarh: “Doctor, is it safe for my skin type?” And it’s a completely valid concern, because not all lasers are created equal – especially for the melanin-rich skin tones common in North India.

Let me give you a straightforward answer.

Why Skin Tone Matters for Laser Hair Removal

Lasers work by targeting melanin – the pigment in hair follicles. The problem is that our skin also contains melanin. If the laser can’t distinguish between the melanin in the hair and the melanin in the surrounding skin, it can cause burns, hyperpigmentation (dark patches) or hypopigmentation (white patches).

This is why older laser technologies weren’t suitable for Fitzpatrick skin types IV–VI (medium brown to very dark skin) – which includes most Indian, South Asian and mixed-heritage skin tones.

Which Lasers Are Safe for Indian Skin?

Nd:YAG Laser (1064nm)

The Nd:YAG laser is widely considered the gold standard for darker skin tones. Its longer wavelength bypasses the surface melanin and targets the deeper hair follicle. This makes it significantly safer for Indian skin and is the technology we recommend and use.

Diode Laser (810nm)

The diode laser is effective for medium skin tones (Fitzpatrick IV) when used by an experienced practitioner with appropriate settings. It’s less suitable for very dark skin but works well for a large proportion of Indian women.

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) – Not Recommended for Darker Skin

IPL is often marketed as “laser” hair removal but it isn’t a true laser. It uses a broad spectrum of light wavelengths and is not well-suited for darker skin tones. IPL has a higher risk of burns and pigmentation issues on Indian skin.

Common Treatment Areas for Women

How Many Sessions Will You Need?

Most women need 6–8 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart for the best results. Hair grows in cycles – the laser only affects hair in the active growth phase, so multiple sessions are needed to catch all follicles. After the initial course, occasional maintenance sessions (once or twice a year) may be needed.

What Should You Avoid Before and After Treatment?

When done correctly with the right technology and trained hands, laser hair removal is safe, effective and life-changing for women dealing with unwanted hair – whether from PCOS or otherwise.

We offer laser hair removal for women in Chandigarh using technology suitable for all Indian skin tones. Book a consultation to find out which treatment plan suits you.
